![]() The thoughts and recollections of Yoakam, Haggard, Lee, and Parton recur throughout Country Music. And Owens' hard-driving, high-pitched "Tiger By the Tail" epitomized his desire to "sound like a locomotive comin' right through the front door," in Yoakam’s words. He admired The Beatles when many of his ilk and generation didn't. But Owens, with whom Yoakam eventually collaborated on "The Streets of Bakersfield," also was an under-appreciated visionary. Yoakam likewise was a big fan of Buck Owens, co-host of the aforementioned Hee Haw. One of the more touching moments in Country Music comes in Episode 5 when Dwight Yoakam gets teary-eyed while recalling one of Haggard's many achingly poignant lyrics. He became a model prisoner, earned early parole for good behavior and then began doing what he did so well for the rest of his life. Then Johnny Cash came to perform his famous jailhouse concert, with a highly impressed Haggard among the inmates in the audience. Haggard says he had figured out how to escape from there, too, but was swayed by inmates who convinced him that he had a real talent for writing and singing. He details his early years of constant incarceration ("I escaped 17 times from different places in California") before being sentenced to 15 years in that state's notoriously hard-core San Quentin lockdown. Not known for being particularly talkative, Haggard turns out to be a generous contributor and keeper of the flame. Among those no longer with us, none are more notable than the legendary Merle Haggard (left), who was born on April 6, 1937, and died on that same date in 2016. And the heart of country music beats with the lyrical, autobiographical yarns of its most famous stars, many of whom came from crushing poverty or child abuse – or both.ĭolly Parton, for instance. Whether heart-rending, soul-searching or at times just plain goofy, the music that evolved from hillbilly to country-western to just plain country is something to hear, behold and treasure throughout this long and winding masterwork. But as Burns and writer/collaborator Dayton Duncan resoundingly show, the music birthed by America's downtrodden – The Great Unwashed, if you will – is unvarnished poetry when it comes to life its own self. Nor does The Grand Ole Opry sound quite as high tone as Carnegie Hall. The long-running TV show, Hee Haw (left), had something to do with that. And as Burns writes in its preface, “It is conventional wisdom, accepted by too many, that country music is somehow a lesser art form.not befitting the scrutiny of sophisticates and – God forbid – scholars.” There is, of course, a multi-pound companion coffee table book (Alfred A. If these kinds of perturbations exist, they cannot be calibrated from the astrometric observations but will produce a global parallax bias. In the approximation of infinitely small fields of view, it is shown that certain perturbations of the basic angle are observationally indistinguishable from a global shift of the parallaxes. We then looked for a combination of perturbations that had no net effect on the observables. The changes in observables produced by small perturbations of the basic angle, attitude, and parallaxes were calculated analytically. We examine the coupling between a global parallax shift and specific variations of the basic angle, namely those related to the satellite attitude with respect to the Sun. Uncalibrated variations of the basic angle may produce systematic errors in the computed parallaxes.Īims. The distance to the tank is 2644.419 feet. Plugging in numerical values, the equation becomes, Now that we’ve determined the values for d and the tangent of the angle θ, we can plug those numbers into our equation to determine r, the distance to the enemy tank using the equation, Our soldier reads the gauge and determines that θ is equal to 89.935°, so the tangent of θ is equal to: So how does the artillery soldier determine θ‘s value? With the tank in clear focus, it’s easily measured with an indicator gauge attached to the adjustable mirror near the right eyepiece on an optical rangefinder. Simply enter the angle θ‘s value, then press the TAN button. This value can be found in most trigonometry textbook tables, but is most easily found by using a calculator. In our case we’re concerned with the tangent, which is simply the value that’s derived by dividing the length of the side opposite to the angle θ by the length of its adjacent side. Tangent, and other trigonometric functions like sine and cosine, relate the angles of a right triangle to the ratios of the lengths of the sides of the triangle. The fact that a right triangle exists means the distance, r, to the tank can be easily measured using principles found in trigonometry, a branch of mathematics that addresses the properties of triangles, hence, the prefix tri in its name. One of the angles in this triangle is designated on the illustration by the angle θ, and that’s the angle we’ll be working with. The two lines of sight provided by the left and right eyepieces of the rangefinder form a right triangle due to the parallax effect. His first action is to peer through the rangefinder’s eyepieces, rotating the adjustable mirror on the right eyepiece until the tank comes into focus. Luckily, he’s got an optical rangefinder at his disposal to measure the distance between them and crank out an accurate shot. We left off with an artillery soldier spotting an enemy tank in the distance.
![]() All it matters for the Bulldogs is to stay healthy and stay physical which is how it is for this team.īefore letting Coach Crumedy go, I asked him about several athletes on his team who are making an impact for the Bulldogs. Returning all these players has gotten Coach Crumedy excited for the future as they will always be a contender in whatever district and region they are in. Playing 13 sophomores and a freshman last season has helped them gain a lot of experience with them returning all 11 on defense and 8 on offense. As they treat each other like family, that will help them figure out with their future. The pillars they have for this program is toughness, character, accountability, selfishness, and faith. Talking to Coach Crumedy, I asked him about the pillars of this program. This helps them have an physical defense that can wear out opponents. On defense, they run a 3-4 defense where they like to have a lot of movement up through stunts and blitzes. Having 147.3 rushing yards per game opens up the pass game for this team, as they have 168.6 passing yards per game. Most of their runs come from the shotgun such as QB power and draws, so anyone can be running the rock for the Bulldogs. On offense, they run the power spread usually in the 11 personnel. The word ego is taken directly from Latin, where it is the nominative of the first person singular personal pronoun and is translated as "I myself" to express emphasis.įigures like Bruno Bettelheim have criticized the way "the English translations impeded students' efforts to gain a true understanding of Freud" by substituting the formalised language of the elaborated code for the quotidian immediacy of Freud's own language.įreud conceived the id as the unconscious instinctual component of personality that is present at birth, the source of bodily needs and wants, emotional impulses and desires, especially aggression and the sexual drive. The term " das Es" was originally used by Georg Groddeck, a physician whose unconventional ideas were of interest to Freud (Groddeck's translators render the term in English as "the It"). Thus, to the German reader, Freud's original terms are to some degree self-explanatory. Freud himself wrote of " das Es", " das Ich", and " das Über-Ich" -respectively, "the It", "the I", and "the Over-I". The terms "id", "ego", and "super-ego" are not Freud's own they are latinisations by his translator James Strachey. He elaborated, refined, and formalised that model in the essay The Ego and the Id (1923). ![]() The ego is thus "in the habit of transforming the id's will into action, as if it were its own." įreud introduced the structural model (id, ego, super-ego) in the essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) in response to the unstructured ambiguity and conflicting uses of the term "the unconscious mind". In the ego psychology model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual desires the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role and the ego is the organized, realistic agent that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical super-ego Freud compared the ego (in its relation to the id) to a man on horseback: the rider must harness and direct the superior energy of his mount, and at times allow for a practicable satisfaction of its urges. The Latin terms id, ego and super-ego were chosen by his original translators and have remained in use. Freud himself used the German terms das Es, Ich, and Über-Ich, which literally translate as "the it", "I", and "over-I". The three agents are theoretical constructs that Freud employed to describe the basic structure of mental life as it was encountered in psychoanalytic practice. In psychoanalytic theory, the id, ego and super-ego are three distinct, interacting agents in the psychic apparatus, defined in Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche. ![]() Use the OCR engine to make image-based/scanned text searchable and selectable.
